Electronic Friday #2 – The one where we built a Joule Thief

February 12, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

This week’s Electronic Friday was brought forward to Thursday due to the coming Chinese New Year celebration. Despite the traffic jam that clogged Damansara Uptown, and the heat and the stuffiness inside the hardware hacking room in HackerspaceKL (yes, we don’t have air conditioners yet, donations are most welcome), we had a good turnout and everyone stayed till 11pm.

If you wanna know what a Joule thief is, you can Google for it. But here’s a brief explanation – Joule thief is a little circuit that can power a small LED from very low voltage source. This can be demonstrated by using an old battery, batteries are nearly dead, or small voltage batteries (like a 3V lithium coin battery). For more photos from yesterday’s workshop, you can view them here: HackerspaceKL Electronic Friday – Basic Electronics Part 2.
