I would like to apologize for the last minute notification, but the session for tomorrow is canceled as our speaker is suddenly unable to be present tomorrow due to sudden illness.

UPDATE: The event calendar has been updated to reflect this cancellation. Also please bring a RJ-45 network cable for the next session as we will be doing a hands-on the BIND configuration using our network switches and a FreeBSD server.

UNIX-g33ks III starts today.
A slight amendment to the previous schedule, today’s session will be introductory in nature as we are finalizing the participant numbers, collecting registration fees and the materials for distribution. The calender will be updated to reflect this change and it will be a full 9 sessions, including the session today.
We will be distributing the VM image and helping participants to setup the machine to allow us to progress quickly into the series. Members of the public who are still interested to attend are invited to do so. This session is FREE for HackerspaceKL members and the public alike. A registration form for walk in participants will be made available soon.

UNIX-g33ks III
We’re back and to kick off 2011, HackerspaceKL presents to you, UNIX-g33ks III!
This 3rd instalment of the series aims to teach the group how to install, configure, and secure web related application technologies in a BSD environments using the previous sessions as a primer for a production ready machine. Prerequisites for this part of the series is minimal; an understanding of the UNIX environment in general and/or attended UNIX Essentials before hand.
The session topics will be as follows:-
- Session 1: Basic Internet Understanding – how the internet ecosystem works
- Session 2: DNS Configuration (master/slave/replication) with an introduction to DNSSEC
- Session 3: Apache httpd (installation/configuration using freebsd ports)
- Session 4: Alternative web servers (Nginx/Lighttpd installation and use cases)
- Session 5: Database and data management (covering sqlite & mysql)
- Session 6: Performance tuning (both for httpd/mysql and OS)
- Session 7: IPFW – IP firewall management
- Session 8: Hardening and security assessment

FreeBSD Essentials ends; Announcing UNIX-g33ks III
UNIX-g33ks FreeBSD essentials is coming to an end with the last session on FreeBSD system management and maintenance being held on the 5th of December 2010. Totalling 6 sessions starting from the 19th September 2010, this series has already covered enough material to allow participants to deploy and administer their own FreeBSD system to suit their needs.
On behalf of our FreeBSD mentor, Mr Suresh Ramasamy, we would like to thank the g33ks and members of HackerspaceKL who came to our sessions and sharing knowledge throughout the series.

UNIX-g33ks Part Deux

Registration and announcing UNIX-g33ks Part Deux
We are back from HITB2010KUL (expect a write up in a couple of days) and we are raring to go. Apparently some people have been asking if we are going to restart the UNIX-g33ks series while visiting us at the Hard Hack Village and the answer is, YES, we are continuing UNIX-g33ks with Part Deux – FreeBSD essentials.
As before the sessions will be conducted by Suresh Ramasamy, our resident FreeBSD kung-fu practitioner and will be held at HackerspaceKL from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm. However we are going to be changing a little bit in regards to our fee structure.
- Members of HackerspaceKL – Free ( member benefits rock eh?)
- Non-Members have 2 options to pay for the sessions -
- Full Payment of RM 70 for all 7 sessions.
- An installment plan of RM 40 for the first 4 sessions & the remaining RM 30 for the last 3 sessions
We are also limiting the number of maximum participants to 25 people, and this is done on a first come, first serve basis.

The series will now focus on FreeBSD specific topics, extending where UNIX essentials left off. The sessions will be broken up as follows:-
- Understanding how the operating system internals work
- Installing FreeBSD
- System level configuration and customization
- Introduction to /usr/src tree
- Application management via PORTS
- Configuring custom freebsd kernel
- Linux compatibility stack
- FreeBSD System management and maintenance

UNIX-g33ks Essential series has started.

UNIX-g33ks : The 1st session on 27th June 2010.
It’s the 27th of June 2010 and it marks the start of the UNIX-g33ks series beginning with the UNIX Essentials.
On behalf of our speaker, Suresh as well as HackerspaceKL for those who managed to come for the 1st session of the UNIX-g33ks series, the response was phenomenal. Out of 58 registrants, 28 actually managed to make it today, and we managed to stretch the capacity of the infrastructure of HackerspaceKL to it’s limits.
Details for the 2nd and 3rd sessions of UNIX-g33ks are already posted on the events calender. With regards to the possibility of having an alternative session, more details will be made available on the site and the mailing list as soon as it becomes available.
For today’s attendees, please direct any feedback,suggestions and ideas to sniffit at hackerspace dot my. Details of your feedback will be treated as private and confidential by HackerspaceKL committee.
Once again thank you for attending the 1st session and we hope to see you on the next one.
