New updates on events happening at HackerspaceKL Sept-Oct

First, on behalf of HackerspaceKL, I would like to wish all our readers, friends & supporters Selamat Hari Raya Eid Fitr.

After a long silence, it’s time to bring news on what’s going down with HackerspaceKL in the months to come. I humbly apologize for the lack of updates as it has been a hectic and tiring amount of days for myself personally as well a majority of the HackerspaceKL crew.

UNIX-g33ks Part Deux begins 09/19/2010

The UNIX-g33ks series continues with the Part Deux of the series, FreeBSD Essentials. The sessions are scheduled to start on the coming 19th of September 2010 at HackerspaceKL with our resident FreeBSD guru, Suresh Ramasamy, beginning at 1.30 pm till 3.30 pm.

These sessions are focused on FreeBSD content along with some tips and tricks on how to manage your FreeBSD setup efficiently. The breakdown of the sessions are as follows:-

  • Understanding how the operating system internals work
  • Installing FreeBSD
  • System level configuration and customization
  • Introduction to /usr/src tree
  • Application management via PORTS
  • Configuring custom freebsd kernel
  • Linux compatibility stack
  • FreeBSD System management and maintenance

Note: Some of these sessions maybe combined to run on the same date depending on the subject matter.

The cool part of FreeBSD essentials is that they can also be applied to managing your Mac OS X setups too. So if you’re a Mac OS X user

Software Freedom Day KL (SFD-KL) is on 09/19/2010

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business — in short, everywhere! The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.

This year, for the first time, SFD is going to be held at HackerspaceKL, organized by our very own one-geek army Ng Swee Meng (@sweemeng on twitter). His efforts to make SFD-KL happen started from 2009 itself, but due to the nature of the clashing schedules, it didn’t happen last year.

SFD-KL will take place at HackerspaceKL on the same day as UNIX-g33ks Part Deux, 19th of September 2010. Check out the event page here.

It’s the 27th of June 2010 and it marks the start of the UNIX-g33ks series beginning with the UNIX Essentials.

On behalf of our speaker, Suresh as well as HackerspaceKL for those who managed to come for the 1st session of the UNIX-g33ks series, the response was phenomenal. Out of 58 registrants,  28 actually managed to make it today, and we managed to stretch the capacity of the infrastructure of HackerspaceKL to it’s limits.

Details for the 2nd and 3rd sessions of UNIX-g33ks are already posted on the events calender. With regards to the possibility of having an alternative session, more details will be made available on the site and the mailing list as soon as it becomes available.

For today’s attendees, please direct any feedback, suggestions and ideas to sniffit at hackerspace dot my. Details of your feedback will be treated as private and confidential by HackerspaceKL committee.

UNIX-g33ks : the 1st Session

June 17, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The UNIX-g33ks 1st session registration is now closed.

We would like to thank those who signed up for the session, which will commence on the 27th of June 2010. At the time of form closure we have a total of 59 registrants, 48 non-members and 11 members of HackerspaceKL. An overwhelming response not anticipated by HackerspaceKL organizers, proving that there is interest from the public to learn and adapt FOSS technologies in enterprise and a personal level.

We have also setup a mailing list for UNIX-g33ks. This mailing list serves a point of interaction between participants of the UNIX-g33ks series and HackerspaceKL. Feel free to share, answer and discuss the anything pertaining to the topics in the sessions or unix-related. This is a moderated list controlled by members of HackerspaceKL.

The next session of UNIX-g33ks,  ”Session 2 – Using your UNIX account – looking at basic linux usage and file system/structure” will be announced shortly after the 1st session.

Once again, thank you for registering with UNIX-g33ks and we hope to see you on the 27th of June.
