WarGames.MY 2011 – Can You Hack IT?

June 20, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – WarGames.MY 2011, Malaysia’s first online capture the flag competition, aims to bring the fun of tinkering and puzzle solving back to hacking! The event will allow Malaysian ‘hackers’ to showcase their skills in a secure and contained environment and prove that they are amongst the best the country has to offer.

Organized by Hackerspace Kuala Lumpur (HSKL), a special interest group operating from Damansara Utama and sponsored by Hack In The Box (HITB) and System Defenders, the competition takes place online for a duration of 24-hours starting from 00:01 (MYT) on Saturday 2nd July and ends Sunday, 3rd July 2011 at 00:01 (MYT).  The challenge will test participants in a variety of areas in IT security including reverse engineering, cryptography, network security, digital forensics, web application security and general puzzle solving.

“Competitions such as this online Capture The Flag (CTF) are excellent venues to identify individuals with the skills and the mindset of a real hacker,” said RuFI0, team leader of The Sexy Kambingz (TSK) who are co-organizers of the competition.

“In any CTF,  knowing how to run automated tools or compile publicly available exploits will get you nowhere as the challenges are custom written to test participants real knowledge of specific vulnerabilities. Anyone can run tools and scripts but it takes an actual hacker to understand how a vulnerability works, how to exploit it and further more, how to fix it,” he added.

WarGames.MY 2011 also offers bonus challenges for participants to have a chance at winning complimentary training passes to this year’s HITB Security Conference (HITBSecConf2011 – Malaysia) held from the 10th – 13th of October 2011. A cash prize of RM2000, sponsored by System Defenders, also awaits this year’s competition winner.

Tonight we have a visitor from US, Jonas S Karlsson, which is also a co-founder of a few hackerspace including the well known Noise Bridge, and one in australia.

He is in Malaysia today and wishes to visit the space, to meetup with the local community, and he bring a friend with him from Beijing China. Anyone that is interested can join us. This is more of a casual meetup.

You can find Jonas web page on http://yesco.org/ .

GGHC Hardware: From Idea – To Prototype – To Final Product

May 4, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Idea: The Story Box

During the brainstorming session, we conceived an idea of doing “The Story Box”. It’s a device with a button and an LCD display. When a user press the button, a random word is displayed on the LCD display. Simple.

Knowing that the competition requires us to use microcontroller and portable power source, we have decided to use an Arduino, powered by any 9V battery.

There are 2 options available to us:
1) Making a full blown Arduino Story Box, OR
2) Making an Arduino Shield.

We choose the latter, since Arduino of some sort are easily available. We just need a shield that can be plugged on top of an Arduino to do the job. This will also make the solution cheaper.

This translate into the following hardware specification:

16×2 Character LCD: displaying the random word.
Momentary button: the only button for user interaction.
Buzzer: acknowledging that the user has pressed the button.
I2C EEPROM: storing a list of word.
Preset 1: adjusting brightness of the LCD backlit.
Preset 2: adjusting contrast of the LCD display.

Prototype: Where the Hardwork Begins

We are divided into 3 teams: the hardware team, software team and the documentation team.

For starter, the hardware team gave the software team an LCD shield to kick start the programming effort. At the same time, the hardware teams did a quick prototyping on a breadboard.

After we were convinced that the prototype is working, we did another round of prototyping on a Protoshield.

The Story Box on Protoshield

All is well, we then started to lay out the PCB in the EAGLE Layout Editor. After a few iterations, this was what we get. Finally.

Final Product (for GGHC): By No Mean The End

Here is how The Story Box evolved: from idea, to prototype, and finally to final product for the contest.

We will not stop at here. Some members have indicated their interest in taking this further. We are very keen to see how others will use The Story Box. We very much welcome any suggestion to make this The Story Box a useful educational device.

HSKL Income and Expenditure Statement – January 2011

January 31, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The current income and expenditure statement as of January 2011 is available here. Summary:

  • Account balance is RM1162.93. This amount is not enough to cover rental for March.
  • Membership count is currently 13
  • We received a total donation of RM110 for the month of January (individual donations and collections from HSKL Security Meetup)

Until we get more members, HSKL will not be able to sustain itself in the long run. To pay for rental and utilities (approximately RM1500 per month), we need at least 30 members (membership fee is now RM50 per month for all).

NOTE: As an effort to be a not-for-profit organization, we are publishing our income and expenditure statement every month. Our income and expenditure statement for the year 2010 is available here. If you have any queries regarding this, please email your questions to our committee members and/or m...@hackerspace.my/kake...@hackerspace.my
