HSKL Income and Expenditure Statement – January 2011

January 31, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The current income and expenditure statement as of January 2011 is available here. Summary:

  • Account balance is RM1162.93. This amount is not enough to cover rental for March.
  • Membership count is currently 13
  • We received a total donation of RM110 for the month of January (individual donations and collections from HSKL Security Meetup)

Until we get more members, HSKL will not be able to sustain itself in the long run. To pay for rental and utilities (approximately RM1500 per month), we need at least 30 members (membership fee is now RM50 per month for all).

NOTE: As an effort to be a not-for-profit organization, we are publishing our income and expenditure statement every month. Our income and expenditure statement for the year 2010 is available here. If you have any queries regarding this, please email your questions to our committee members and/or m...@hackerspace.my/kake...@hackerspace.my

HSKL Income & Expenditure Statement – December 2010

December 1, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Our latest income and expenditure statement can be found here.  The are a few good news regarding our finances:

  • HSKL is officially debt free. Money owed to @spoonfork totalling RM10,209.04 have been fully paid.
  • HSKL’s account is positive for the first time in many months
  • We have successfully managed to keep costs low

The not so good news are:

  • We still have very limited members to keep the space alive. In November, our membership count was 13, and at RM100 per person per month, that is just enough to pay for rental.

For the past two months, the most common feedback that I get from would-be new members was “RM100 per month ah? Why so expensive. Cannot afford la.” So why is RM100 so expensive per month?

But that is the wrong question to ask. The right question to ask is “Why is HSKL charging RM100 per month?“. The simple answer to that question is: we don’t have enough members. The more members we have, the less that everyone will have to pay.

The first year (almost!) of HSKL’s founding have been largely spent on developing core skills and knowledge. The handful of members that we have have accomplished so much. We started with zero knowledge on Arduino up to a point where we can design and build our own shield now. And we are slowly gaining recognition in the community.

The next step would logically, to recruit more members, and work on more interesting projects, and get everything that was planned executed. And hopefully, we will get more members and lower the membership fee.

OK, back to the accounts. Summary, since January:

  • Average income per month is RM1808.67
  • Average expenses per month is RM1800.92
  • Balance: RM93.03

And for those who hasn’t paid their membership fees, please do so as soon as possible.

This is our account as it stands up until the end of September 2010. We are indebted to individuals who have donated money to the space, and also the members that have provided support to keep the space alive. As of the end of September 2010, we are in the red: RM -1540.92.  For the past 9 months, we have been collecting an average of RM1775.23 per month, and monthly expenses were RM1946.44 per month. That is RM -171.21 short per month.

HSKL Income and Expenditure Statement – Jan – August 2010

August 15, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

As a not-for-profit organization, we are publishing our income and expenditure statement. The latest statement covering January till August 2010 is available here. We are pretty much in the red, and the number of paying members that we have up until August has not been able to cover the full operating cost of the space.

We have not been vigilant enough in getting members, or ‘forcing’ current paying members to pay – our strategy has always been a minimum of three months membership, and after that is up to the person whether he or she still want to remain as paying members. Basically, we don’t force or bind members longer than three months.

Other updates: we bought an aircond – so the hardware hacking room is pretty cool now. And we’ve a projector. Yay!
