HITB – Hard Hack Village

September 24, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Overview

In our daily life we are connected with electronics and micro-controllers. You find them in (mobile)phones, remote controls, computers but also in less visible items like public transport access cards, mood-lamps and much more.

In the HITB Hard-Hack Village you will be able to play-around with electronics. Set up and run by the folks from Hackerspace Kuala Lumpur and Randomdata (Utrecht/Netherlands), the Hard Hack Village will help you to setup your own electronics and demonstrate how easy things work. One of the main electronic components which will be used is the Arduino micro-controller platform. Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

Various electronic kits will be available for sale like Arduino, TV-Bgone, spokepov’s and sim-card readers. You will have the chance to put your kit together in the hard-hack village. In addition, there will also be a “Jumpstart Arduino” lab session which will give you a quick start on how to get working with Arduino.

HITB LAB: Jumpstart Arduino (see HITB Conference Agenda for finalized timing)

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. This 2 hour lab session will give you an introduction to Arduino, what the hardware platform and extensions do, how you can work with the hardware and the interface.

Finally we will show you step by step, how we made one (may-be more) of our projects like Blinky (our LED board), the Garduino (for Garden automation) or our Hackerspace automation system. There will also be lots of hands on stuff to work on at the Hard-Hack Village.

The HITB Hard-Hack Village and Jumpstart Arduino Lab session will be assisted by a team of Tinkers who are able to guide you thru the Arduino GUI installation and hardware setup.

Barry ‘Fish_’ van Kampen’

Barry aka Fish_ is an enthusiast thinker and uses Arduino for his projects. He’s not the guru but he show’s how “easy to use” the platform is with results like the Garduino and Blinky. During his technologic journeys, he made a lot of international friends in the hacker(space) community. He’s also the chairman and one of the founders of Randomdata, a hackerspace in Utrecht. As a professional, he’s an IT security consultant working for ITQ with a great passion for technology. He deals with all kinds of interesting (security) situations. This year he was co-organizing the first-time-ever Hack in the Box Amsterdam event.

Kakeman (Hackerspace KL)

Kok Ming aka Kakeman is a typical hardware guy, getting excited with toys. He is also a member of Hackerspace Kuala Lumpur, having fun learning from his fellow peers. In weekdays he deals with home alarm and home automation system.

Marcus (Hackerspace KL / HiTB CTF Crew 2.0)

Marcus is a member of HackerspaceKL with profound interest in information security, RCE and is also part of the HiTB CTF Crew v2.0. He
is also an avid electronics hobbyist building one of the first Arduino S3V3 in HackerspaceKL.

Please note that HITB – Hard Hack Village area is FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC so feel free to drop in say hello to HackerspaceKL and Randomdata and share on your Arduino experiences or just come and learn something new.

Hope to see you fellow Arduino enthusiasts there.

September 13, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

New updates on events happening at HackerspaceKL Sept-Oct

First, on behalf of HackerspaceKL, I would like to wish all our readers, friends & supporters Selamat Hari Raya Eid Fitr.

After a long silence, it’s time to bring news on what’s going down with HackerspaceKL in the months to come. I humbly apologize for the lack of updates as it has been a hectic and tiring amount of days for myself personally as well a majority of the HackerspaceKL crew.

UNIX-g33ks Part Deux begins 09/19/2010

The UNIX-g33ks series continues with the Part Deux of the series, FreeBSD Essentials. The sessions are scheduled to start on the coming 19th of September 2010 at HackerspaceKL with our resident FreeBSD guru, Suresh Ramasamy, beginning at 1.30 pm till 3.30 pm.

These sessions are focused on FreeBSD content along with some tips and tricks on how to manage your FreeBSD setup efficiently. The breakdown of the sessions are as follows:-

  • Understanding how the operating system internals work
  • Installing FreeBSD
  • System level configuration and customization
  • Introduction to /usr/src tree
  • Application management via PORTS
  • Configuring custom freebsd kernel
  • Linux compatibility stack
  • FreeBSD System management and maintenance

Note: Some of these sessions maybe combined to run on the same date depending on the subject matter.

The cool part of FreeBSD essentials is that they can also be applied to managing your Mac OS X setups too. So if you’re a Mac OS X user

Software Freedom Day KL (SFD-KL) is on 09/19/2010

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business — in short, everywhere! The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.

This year, for the first time, SFD is going to be held at HackerspaceKL, organized by our very own one-geek army Ng Swee Meng (@sweemeng on twitter). His efforts to make SFD-KL happen started from 2009 itself, but due to the nature of the clashing schedules, it didn’t happen last year.

SFD-KL will take place at HackerspaceKL on the same day as UNIX-g33ks Part Deux, 19th of September 2010. Check out the event page here.

More info about Software Freedom Day is available at http://softwarefreedomday.org/

Getting to HackerspaceKL

August 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

FROM KL VIA PUTRA LRT

Board the Putra/Kelana Jaya Line LRT to Taman Bahagia LRT Station. Then take the T626 bus to Jalan 21/1. Your landmark would be York air conditioning offices. Disembark and the space is less than a minute walk from the bus stop.  Entry staircase is next to a wood shop. Proceed to top floor.

Alternative method

Board the Putra/Kelana Jaya Line LRT to Kelana Jaya LRT station. Hop on a cab. Pretty much a straight line from there on.

WARNING this can be very costly. Someone mentioned that a one way trip costs RM15/=.

FROM KL SENTRAL VIA BUS

Tip submitted by joshuatly. Thanks dude.

Take the U82 from KL Sentral. Fare is 2.50. Takes about 30 mins to get to HackerspaceKL.

Hacking the Grant System for Fun & Profit

August 6, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Hacking the Grant System talk by Dinesh Nair (@alphaque) & Chris Leong from Cradle.

“Grants are funds disbursed by one party (Grant Makers), often a Government Department, Corporation, Foundation or Trust, to a recipient, often (but not always) a nonprofit entity, educational institution, business or an individual. In order to receive a grant, some form of “Grant Writing” often referred to as either a proposal or an application is usually required.”

Taken from wikipedia.org

A special session about the grant system in Malaysia & using it for profit as proposed by @alphaque and @spoonfork as a result from this tweet followed by this and other subsequent tweets after that.

Dinesh Nair a.k.a @alphaque from alpahque.com, will be speaking on just the general difference between grants, funding, preseed, mezzanine and others.

Chris Leong from Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd , will be speaking on pre-seed funding (up to RM150K) for early stage projects. Perfect for individuals who may want to commercialize their business ideas and requiring initial funding.

Cradle Investment Programme (CIP) is a fund provider managed by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance (MOF). CIP funds groups of innovative individuals and researchers with technology-oriented ideas and transforms their raw ideas (pre-seed funding level) into commercially viable ventures. More details on CIP available here.

This event is Free and open to members of the public. Please fill the sign up form if you are interested to attend.
