HSKL Income and Expenditure Statement – Jan – August 2010
August 15, 2010 by spoonfork · Leave a Comment
As a not-for-profit organization, we are publishing our income and expenditure statement. The latest statement covering January till August 2010 is available here. We are pretty much in the red, and the number of paying members that we have up until August has not been able to cover the full operating cost of the space.
We have not been vigilant enough in getting members, or ‘forcing’ current paying members to pay – our strategy has always been a minimum of three months membership, and after that is up to the person whether he or she still want to remain as paying members. Basically, we don’t force or bind members longer than three months.
Other updates: we bought an aircond – so the hardware hacking room is pretty cool now. And we’ve a projector. Yay!

Getting to HackerspaceKL
August 8, 2010 by sniffit · Leave a Comment
FROM KL VIA PUTRA LRT
Board the Putra/Kelana Jaya Line LRT to Taman Bahagia LRT Station. Then take the T626 bus to Jalan 21/1. Your landmark would be York air conditioning offices. Disembark and the space is less than a minute walk from the bus stop. Entry staircase is next to a wood shop. Proceed to top floor.
Alternative method
Board the Putra/Kelana Jaya Line LRT to Kelana Jaya LRT station. Hop on a cab. Pretty much a straight line from there on.
WARNING this can be very costly. Someone mentioned that a one way trip costs RM15/=.
FROM KL SENTRAL VIA BUS

Hacking the Grant System for Fun & Profit
August 6, 2010 by sniffit · Leave a Comment
Hacking the Grant System talk by Dinesh Nair (@alphaque) & Chris Leong from Cradle.
“Grants are funds disbursed by one party (Grant Makers), often a Government Department, Corporation, Foundation or Trust, to a recipient, often (but not always) a nonprofit entity, educational institution, business or an individual. In order to receive a grant, some form of “Grant Writing” often referred to as either a proposal or an application is usually required.”
Taken from wikipedia.org
A special session about the grant system in Malaysia & using it for profit as proposed by @alphaque and @spoonfork as a result from this tweet followed by this and other subsequent tweets after that.
Dinesh Nair a.k.a @alphaque from alpahque.com, will be speaking on just the general difference between grants, funding, preseed, mezzanine and others.
Chris Leong from Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd , will be speaking on pre-seed funding (up to RM150K) for early stage projects. Perfect for individuals who may want to commercialize their business ideas and requiring initial funding.
Cradle Investment Programme (CIP) is a fund provider managed by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance (MOF). CIP funds groups of innovative individuals and researchers with technology-oriented ideas and transforms their raw ideas (pre-seed funding level) into commercially viable ventures. More details on CIP available here.
This event is Free and open to members of the public. Please fill the sign up form if you are interested to attend.
